YOUR TEAM

The Group App Store provides the central in-car app distribution and commerce platform for the Volkswagen Group, spanning brands such as Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Škoda, CUPRA, Bentley, and more. We are rebuilding its backend from the ground up as a cloud-native platform on CARIAD’s Megatron PaaS on Microsoft Azure, designed to serve around 20 million vehicles globally. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will become part of an established team shaping this new platform and taking technical ownership of a critical part of the Group App Store. The role deliberately combines hands-on software engineering with technical ownership: you will contribute directly to the codebase while reviewing and accepting deliverables developed together with our external engineering partner. You will help shape architecture, APIs, cloud infrastructure, quality, and operational excellence for a backend built to serve all Volkswagen Group brands at scale.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Design and build the cloud-native Group App Store backend from the ground up on CARIAD’s Megatron PaaS and Microsoft Azure
  • Define service boundaries, API contracts, authentication flows, data persistence, and event-driven architecture patterns
  • Develop and maintain the vehicle, developer portal, and companion app APIs, with OpenAPI specifications as the binding contract
  • Contribute hands-on to the shared codebase, review pull requests, and ensure that partner deliverables meet agreed quality and acceptance criteria
  • Own the Azure landscape, including networking, access control, environment segregation, security, governance, and cloud cost
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated quality gates, environment promotion, and rollback mechanisms
  • Establish observability through structured logging, distributed tracing, metrics, dashboards, SLOs, and alerting
  • Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders and our external engineering partner to deliver a secure, scalable, and reliable platform

WHO YOU ARE

  • 5+ years of professional backend software development experience in complex, production-grade environments
  • Deep expertise in cloud-native backend development, distributed systems, and scalable service architectures
  • Strong experience designing REST APIs, service boundaries, authentication flows, data persistence, and event-driven architectures
  • Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure, including IAM/RBAC, networking, Key Vault, security, and cloud operations
  • Experienced in designing and operating CI/CD pipelines, observability, logging, tracing, metrics, and production monitoring
  • Strong understanding of secure and resilient backend systems, including TLS, rate limiting, error handling, and DDoS protection
  • Comfortable working hands-on in a shared codebase while reviewing architecture, code quality, and technical deliverables from external development partners
  • Strong technical judgement and communication skills, with the confidence to take ownership, make decisions, and constructively challenge solutions when needed

At CARIAD, we embrace individuality and diversity because we believe our differences make us stronger. We actively seek to build teams with a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. Our goal is to create an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute. If you need assistance with your application due to a disability, please reach out to us at careers@cariad.technology - we are happy to support you.
