Brief Role Description

Gallium nitride power semiconductors are considered to be the material system of the next generation. To date, there are no stable components available for higher drive powers. Within the scope of this thesis, structures for automotive gallium nitride power semiconductor device structures are analyzed. The aim of the analysis is to determine the possibilities for influencing the switching, transmitting and conduction behavior and to identify the dominant internal physical processes. On this basis, (especially vertical) structures are to be worked out, which are particularly suitable for an automotive application. Semiconductor devices have reached a level of complexity where an analytical description is not sufficient, so that FEM-based expert tools must be used for design and calculation. The aim of this thesis is to develop a device that is suitable for production as a vertical component in GaN technology. This includes the design with the help of FEM simulation, the design, the layout and the corresponding characterization and modeling, as well as the measurement of the prototypes and test samples.

Possible Tasks within this Role

  • Carrying out a PhD project on the topic of "Design of vertical GaN power devices"
  • Designing, simulating, and layouting a power component for use in drive converters
  • Setting up and managing suppliers for the processing of test components
  • Constructing laboratory samples based on the test components
  • Performing, evaluating and communicating material simulations

The final doctoral topic is defined together with the professor (f/m/d). The prerequisite for the cooperation is the confirmation of supervision as well as a confirmed delimitation of topics by the professor (f/m/d) of a university or research institution entitled to confer a doctorate.

Qualification requirements

  • Very good university degree in physics, electrical engineering or chemistry with the right to award a doctorate
  • In-depth knowledge in the area of semiconductor physics, processes and manufacturing procedures as well as power electronics, circuit technology, components of electrical engineering
  • Experience with simulation techniques, FEM simulation, assembly and connection technology, metallurgy, module technology
  • Knowledge in the area of characterization of electrical components, measurement technology and analyst techniques of semiconductors e.g. IR spectroscopy, SEM

Relevant Soft Skills

  • Analytical thinking
  • Teamwork
  • Communication skills

Relevant Hard Skills regarding…

  • Scientific method
  • Project management
  • Organizational management

Your benefits within the 3-year doctoral program

  • Attractive salary & 30 vacation days
  • 35-hour week, flexible working hours, remote work
  • Free seminars on scientific work and interdisciplinary qualifications
  • Participation in the doctoral network for scientific exchange with science representatives and other doctoral candidates within the Volkswagen Group
  • Subsequent possibility of permanent employment
