ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a strategic and results-driven Sustainability Strategy Specialist to develop and implement sustainability strategies that reduce Volkswagen Group Africa’s ecological footprint, strengthen supply-chain sustainability, support regulatory compliance, and embed responsible business practices across the organisation. - This position is based in Production (Kariega)
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and implement a comprehensive sustainability framework aligned with Volkswagen Group strategy, African requirements, international legislation, and industry best practice
- Embed sustainability principles into product development, manufacturing processes, corporate policies, and long-term plant development strategies.
- Coordinate the Social, Governance, People, Environment, and Business sustainability pillars to support local relevance and global competitiveness
- Establish and guide the Sustainability Circle and coordinate implementation of OD OHSE 25 across departments and subsidiaries.
- Integrate sustainability requirements with OSHE, government regulations, Group directives and industry guidelines.
- Drive waste reduction, circularity, recycling and Extended Producer Responsibility initiatives.
- Engage policymakers and stakeholders on proposed sustainability legislation and develop employee training initiatives. Supervision.
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Qualifications:
- National Diploma, BSc or BTech in Environmental Management/Sciences, Engineering Sustainability Management, Engineering or Business Management.
Work Experience:
- 5 to 10 years of experience in an industrial manufacturing environment.
- Minimum 3 years in sustainability management, environmental sustainability or a manufacturing leadership role.
- Strategy development and implementation experience.
- Experience engaging across organisational levels and with government stakeholders.
- Experience in ESG reporting and scoping large-scale sustainability projects, including funding solutions.
- Knowledge of ISO 14001 and Extended Producer Responsibility legislation.
- Water and effluent treatment technology experience is advantageous.
Technical & Behavioral Competencies:
- Project management and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Strategic and critical thinking
- Strong numerical, analytical and root-cause analysis skills
- Strategic communication and presentation across all levels
- Teamwork and internal/external stakeholder focus
- Change management and coaching skills
- MS Office and information-systems proficiency
