ABOUT THE ROLE
The role of the Project Engineer (Automation) is to evaluate, conceptualise, develop specifications, and coordinate the design, manufacturing, and installation of facilities to improve existing manufacturing systems, production processes, and efficiency. This position is based in the Production Planning Division (Kariega)
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Preparing specifications for facilities (enquiries, cost estimates, project justifications, and technical evaluation of tenders.
- Liaising frequently with external suppliers and internal customers to ensure alignment on project requirements.
- Managing contractors and ensuring adherence to project specifications, safety requirements, and quality standards.
- Consulting with planning sections in an advisory capacity to support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Establishing and managing project timing plans, budgets, and controls to meet deadlines and cost targets.
- Providing information and analysis to support management decision-making and strategic planning.
- Managing system and facilities data to support production, including managing and updating of SQL production databases.
- Developing innovative, in-house engineering solutions to address production challenge
- Applying multidisciplinary engineering techniques (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Civil) to achieve optimal solutions.
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Qualifications:
- National Diploma or Degree in Mechatronics / Electrical / Electronic Engineering.
Work Experience:
- Minimum 3 - 5 years relevant experience in a project planning for production/manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of automation systems, production processes, layouts, and Final Assembly facilities.
- Working knowledge of PLCs, robotics, industrial networks, and automation systems (e.g. Siemens PLCs).
- Understanding of programming fundamentals.
Technical & Behavioral Competencies:
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage at all levels.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Analytical thinking with an innovative problem-solving approach.
- Computer literacy (MS Office).
- Willingness to travel locally and internationally when required.
