Calibration & Compliance Specialist

Brief Role Description

The Calibration and Compliance Specialist (CCS) is an integral part of the Emissions Department that is responsible for overseeing, performing, and verifying all regulatory calibration verification and certification requirements in the laboratory.

 

The CCS’s responsibilities encompasses the accuracy and conclusiveness of all calibration results to ensure governmental compliance of test equipment and test procedures. This position exists to ensure compliance with Air Resource Board (ARB), Code CA Regulations (CCR), Clean Air Act and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) vehicle testing regulations (CFR 86, 1065, 1066), in order to avoid fines and other financial damage to the group, as well as to ensure accurate test results for various internal VW departments in order to meet Research & Development engineering deadlines.

 

The role reports to the Emissions Laboratory Manager (ELM) to assure full compliance and accurate results of the complex testing procedures and measurement equipment in accordance with governmental regulations.

Possible Tasks within this Role

Calibration and Compliance(50%)

  • Oversees all daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly calibration and verification of test equipment to comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Oversees, monitors, and performs calibration gases quality check and reorder supplies when appropriate.
  • Calibrates and maintains test equipment and recording devices including analyzer curves, converter check, and propane injection verification.
  • Acts as a contact for all technical calibration and certifications issues during a governmental certification audit.
  • Ensures accurate records of calibration and certification records, data, and observations in digital, as well as printed form.
  • Establishes relationships with international colleagues from equivalent departments in Germany (VWAG & AUDI AG) and Mexico to stay in accordance with governmental compliance as well as internal company standards.
  • Adheres to policies in regards to data retention with corporate and government mandated retention regulations.
  • Assists in the development of new test procedures to meet and exceed all state and federal testing requirements.
  • Performs system analysis of all technology related issues of vehicle test equipment and the lab facility itself (1st level support for 15 Mio. $ capital equipment assets).
  • Supports coordination of inbound and outbound traffic of test vehicles.
  • Supports all Portable Emissions Measurement System (PEMS) testing activity.

Laboratory Operations – (40%)

  • Operates and controls emissions test equipment accordingly.
  • Conducts all equipment verification procedures to achieve high degree of dependability.
  • Acts as a contact for supplier companies, coordinates, and oversees required maintenance and repairs.
  • Troubleshoots, analyzes, and repairs all laboratory testing equipment to maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Assists in the Integration of Inca Measurement tool in Test Cells to ensure that specific modules/cables used to convert signals to data specific to the Test.
  • Ensures the Post Process report formatting of Inca Measurement results in test cells correctly correlate to specific test reports
    • Communicates and addresses safety-related issues to Emissions Laboratory Manager.
    • Assists and supports in overseeing, prioritizing, and scheduling daily test operations in close relation with Lab Operations Engineer.
    • Updates current lab processes to improve business unit efficiency.
    • Updates and maintains Emissions Laboratory Manual to newly integrated system enhancements.

    Project Management – (10%)

    • Assists and oversees all expansion and equipment installation projects in the emissions laboratory in absence of Lab Operations Engineer.
    • Assists in researching and recommending types of parts, testing supplies, test fuels, calibration gases, hardware, software, tools, and any other equipment necessary to conduct lab activities.
    Assists Lab Operations Engineer in overseeing installations while providing technical support.

Qualifications & Requirements

Years of Experience : 5-7 years of experience in automotive, mechanical, chemical, environmental engineering

 

Education Required: Bachelors Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Environmental engineering or quivalent

Education Desired: Masters Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Environmental engineering

Skills

Required: Specific knowledge of Emissions Equipment Calibrations ISO17025 experience
