Brief Role Description

The Center of Excellence Battery at the Braunschweig plant develops high-voltage battery systems for electric and hybrid vehicles for all Group companies. This includes the design of the battery system as well as the development of electronics and software for the overall system. The "Test and Trial" department ensures compliance with our strict requirements in terms of functionality, robustness and safety for all functions, projects and organizations of battery development by means of intensive testing. The continuous development of our test methods, processes and tools, as well as the test infrastructure, is the cornerstone of the high quality of Volkswagen's high-voltage battery systems and the success of electromobility. In this extremely exciting and dynamically growing environment, we are looking for you to strengthen our motivated team of test managers. For the future of electromobility, the effective and efficient safeguarding of battery systems plays a key role in ensuring the quality features that are central to our customers (e.g. safety, robustness, reliability). In particular, the swelling behavior of the battery cells not only affects the cell level, but also affects the mechanical design of the system and has an influence on the service life. In order to derive suitable test procedures taking into account the service life, a systemic consideration of the swelling behavior is required.

Possible Tasks within this Role

  •      Developing a structured knowledge base and identifying significant parameters
  •      Methodologically deriving recommendations for action at module/stack and system level
  •      Identifying, defining, and collecting appropriate metrics to measure test progress and quality
  •      Identifying and developing suitable test procedures for the determination of swelling in stack and system including their optimization

.
The final doctoral topic is defined together with the professor (f/m/d). The prerequisite for the cooperation is the confirmation of supervision as well as a confirmed delimitation of topics by the professor (f/m/d) of a university or research institution entitled to confer a doctorate.

Qualification requirements

  • Very well completed university degree in the field of chemistry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, automotive engineering or a comparable qualification (STEM) with the right to pursue a doctorate
  • In-depth knowledge in the field of battery cells and cell behavior
  • Experience in the automotive sector and the development of HV battery systems desirable
  • Knowledge in the field of the application of test management tools and classic metrics for test control desirable
  • Advanced knowledge in the application of AI/MI and/or simulation of mechanical systems desirable

Relevant Soft Skills

  • Creativity
  • Teamwork
  • Sense of responsibility

Relevant Hard Skills regarding…

  • Scientific method
  • Project management
  • Organizational management

Your benefits within the 3-year doctoral program

  • Attractive salary & 30 vacation days

  • 35-hour week, flexible working hours, remote work

  • Free seminars on scientific work and interdisciplinary qualifications

  • Participation in the doctoral network for scientific exchange with science representatives and other doctoral candidates within the Volkswagen Group

  • Subsequent possibility of permanent employment
