Senior Backend Developer
Volkswagen Group Services is a Volkswagen Group company oriented towards working for Group companies worldwide.
We provide services in the areas of production, logistics, data engineering (IT), engineering, consulting, quality, business services, human resources, communication, and administrative and financial services. We are focused on our clients’ activities and take responsibility for carrying them out on their behalf.
We are currently hiring a Senior Backend Developer to join our I&E HUB in Lisbon.
Who we are?
At the Innovation & Engineering Hub, we develop bold, market-ready solutions that support Volkswagen Group and its leading brands. Together with TRATON Group’s Global R&D — home to brands like Scania, MAN, International, and Volkswagen Truck & Bus — we’re building the future of intelligent and sustainable transport. Global R&D focuses on:
• Alternative Drive Systems
• Digitalization
• Automated Driving
• Road Safety We’re not just manufacturing vehicles — we’re engineering the future of mobility.
What do we do in our team?
In the R2D2 (Real-Time Remote Data Delivery) team, we build and evolve a connected vehicle data product that enables Data Scientists, Data Engineers, and Digital Services teams to access vehicle data in a scalable and efficient way.
Operating across embedded and cloud domains, we design end-to-end solutions that allow stakeholders to request and receive relevant vehicle data through secure and reliable mechanisms. By simplifying and standardizing data access, we accelerate innovation across digital products and analytics initiatives. Vehicle data plays a critical role in improving performance, reliability, safety, and sustainability. The insights generated support better engineering decisions, smarter logistics planning, optimized fleet usage, and deeper understanding of vehicle health and driver behavior.
We work in an agile environment with a strong product-oriented mindset, taking ownership from idea to operation and ensuring what we build is robust, scalable, and trusted.
What will your responsibilities be?
• Lead the development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of backend solutions and internal tools using modern cloud infrastructure in the automotive IoT context.
• Drive the implementation and maintenance of functionality for our trucks using agile methodologies, significantly contributing to our technical roadmap.
• Design and create products, prototypes, and MVPs for near-vehicle services.
• Architect and manage cloud-native microservices using containers, serverless functions, RESTful APIs, and event streaming.
• Take full ownership of the products you build, including validating compatibility with embedded systems using hardware test setups.
• Provide expert advice to your team and other teams on backend and tool development in an automotive IoT environment, continuously improving service, tooling, and processes.
• Proactively identify and solve problems, acting as the interface between electrical engineers, IT technology, and users.
• Embrace a results-oriented approach with a commitment to learning new technologies and solving problems innovatively
What requirements are we looking for?
• Bachelor's degree in related field or comparable job expertise.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience.
• Java/Kotlin Expertise: Deep expertise in backend development using Java/Kotlin, with significant focus on RESTful APIs and event-driven architecture (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis, SQS, MQTT).
• Framework Proficiency: Mastery of frameworks, particularly Spring Boot, with the ability to leverage its full capabilities.
• Database Management: Advanced knowledge and experience with SQL and NoSQL database management systems, capable of designing and optimizing complex database solutions.
• Cloud Services Mastery: Extensive experience with cloud services (preferably AWS) • paradigms such as Infrastructure-as-Code, PaaS, alerting, and monitoring, with a proven ability to integrate and optimize these services.
• CI/CD and Microservices: In-depth experience in designing, implementing, and managing CI/CD pipelines and microservices architecture.
• Software Principles: Solid understanding and application of Clean Code and Clean Architecture principles, with a strong emphasis on quality, maintainability, and usability.
• Very good English skills, both written and spoken.
What do we offer?
• Competitive compensation package.
• Flexible work hours and a hybrid model.
• Attractive workspace.
