Brief Role Description

The Lead Electrical Distribution Engineer will report to the Manager of Distribution Engineering Services but will work cross functionally with a variety of EA departments.  The candidate will be expected to provide project level electrical designs, technical insight, review of contractor drawings, and lead meetings with electrical equipment manufacturers [charging equipment, switchboard, battery energy storage systems, transformers]. In addition the candidate will support testing and documentation of select equipment, provide hands-on support to Electrify America regional managers and project managers in review of electrical sections of drawings and utility design packages, develop Electrify America design standards with electrical component input, provide input on National Electrical Code requirements and be a key stakeholder in decision making on Electrify America equipment selection.

The Lead Electrical Distribution Engineer will be expected to participate in meetings with permitting jurisdictions and / or utilities were required to explain charging plans and all associate electrical components, as well as meetings with equipment manufacturers demonstrating the ability to effectively communicate Electrify America’s electrical equipment performance, configuration, quality expectations and NEC compliance needs. 

Possible Tasks within this Role

Role Responsibilities:

Main responsibility – assign % of time spent

  • Lead all electrical engineering needs for the Electrify America operations team including designs, calculations and documentation QAQC, including supporting cross-functional teams in the development and implementation of equipment to be used on Electrify America, Canada and Commercial construction sites. (20%)
  • Work directly with Electrify America equipment providers on electrical components of hardware to include switchboard, Battery Energy Storage Systems and charging equipment. (10%)
  • Provide dedicated support for the field team and project architect and designer in construction drawing reviews. (10%)
  • Work collaboratively with Electrify America’s lab team for testing and documentation of charging and related equipment. (10%)
  • Design electrical sections of standard permitting sets for construction projects. (10%)
  • Assist in the development and implementation of National Design Standards. (10%)

Additional responsibilities – assign % of time

  • Lead relationships with numerous construction management firms, contractors and sub-contractors to perform cost-effective and high-quality installations. (5%)
  • Spearhead the review of engineering, construction and program-level campaign contracts. (5%)
  • Provide critical technical input for purchasing and accounting to on-board and implement new engineering and construction vendors. (5%)
  • Manage electrical design elements of utility coordination to create and leverage strong relationships with electric utilities to support rapid utility design, construction and energization of projects. (5%)
  • Act as a subject matter expect for executives in providing technical and construction expertise including ensuring company-wide adherence to all design and constructions standards and processes. (5%)
  • Travel as needed to oversee field-team progress, and documents evidence of program progress, adherence to project management processes and ensures rigorous quality and safety controls. (5%)

Qualification requirements

Years of Relevant Experience:

  • 7-10 years 

Education (Required):

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering

  • Professional Engineer or Engineer in Training

  • Advanced mathematical skills for calculation of design equations
  • Excellent communication skills to explain technical specifics to peers and customers
  • Writing skills for preparing manuals, parts lists, proposals and design documentation
  • Focus and concentration to understand complex electrical systems
  • Self-motivation to keep up with current electrical advances using new technologies
